Goodwill Ambassador and Oxbridge Mentorship Programme

Kuching and Kuala Lumpur 2017

The Goodwill Ambassador and Oxbridge Mentorship Programme is an incredibly fulfilling, enriching and enjoyable experience. Students will be offered a unique opportunity to get real-life exposure to their future degree subject by shadowing doctors, scientists, dentists, lawyers, engineers and other professionals. We are committed to helping students in gaining places at top UK universities for the most competitive courses including Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Economics, Law, Engineering, Business and Finance. For many courses work observation is a prerequisite of a successful application, which creates shortage of quality work observation opportunities in the UK. Students will be accompanied by Oxbridge mentors who will be providing general, subject-specific and university-specific advice and helping students to make the most of their experience.

Two weeks: 22 June 2017 - 08 July 2017
Three weeks: 22 June 2017 - 15 July 2017

The Best Experience:

Work Experience
Work experience is key to gaining a place on top university courses and is essential for writing the personal statements that are part of university applications. Work experience may also be discussed in university interviews. Personal statements should communicate not only the type of meaningful activities students have undertaken, but also what they have learned from these experiences. It is therefore very important to keep a diary throughout the duration of any work experience.

Cultural Experience
Malaysia is a multi-cultural society – a melting pot of races and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together.  This multiculturalism has made Malaysia a gastronomical paradise and home to hundreds of colourful festivals.

Food Experience
Malaysia's diversity means that the country has one of the most exquisite cuisines in the world, and elements of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cooking are both distinct and blended together.

Holiday Experience
One of Malaysia's key attractions is its extreme contrasts which further add to this theme of ‘diversity’. Towering skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts while five-star hotels sit just metres away from ancient reefs. Rugged mountains reach dramatically for the sky while their rainforest-clad slopes sweep down to floodplains teeming with forest life. Cool highland hideaways roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves.

What our students say:

"We had the fantastic experience of seeing live births, caesarean sections, and even post-mortems. These are things you don’t get to see until fourth year medical school, so to be able to turn up to an interview and say you’ve seen this is something really unique, and puts you into a very good position for getting into medical school."

"The activities that were organised after our work experience were really fun and I personally got to bond with the whole group. Being able to talk to doctors and getting their views about certain subject in medicine was interesting. The whole experience was extraordinary and memorable. "

"I found the Goodwill Ambassador Programme to be an amazing experience. It allowed career exposure in a foreign, developing country - which was very different to other placements I'd taken part in. Of course, on the flipside, I enjoyed Malaysia's malls, food and other attractions thoroughly as a tourist too!  "

Teachers views:

"Our students have benefited enormously from this trip and on behalf of the students, and of the college as a whole, I wish to thank you for the work that you have done to make this visit such an outstanding success. Please convey our thanks to the work experience providers. Without their support and cooperation this would not have been possible."

"I am writing to express my gratitude for all the hard work you put into making this year’s Goodwill Ambassador Programme a success. I know that I speak for all concerned when I say that the students benefitted enormously from the unique insight that you were able to offer them. In particular, the students who participated in medical work experience have benefitted significantly as this will undoubtedly help them to obtain offers of places at medical schools of their choice."
